Prairie Barrier-Free Code Guidelines for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Barrier-Free Access Design Standards are constantly updated and vary across Canada. To help, ATS has compiled a barrier-free guide for all of Canada which lists all the recent code updates for all regions of the nation.  Here’s your Barrier-Free Code Guide for the prairie provinces – Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Manitoba Barrier-Free Access Design Standards

Manitoba has also had some revisions to the barrier-free code. Take a look below to find out more.

BATHROOMS

  • Toilet Location – Distance from side wall
    • 285 mm (11.3”) to 305 mm (12”)
  • Minimum internal dimension:
    • Minimum 1700 mm (67”) by 1700 mm (67”)
  • Turning Circle:
    • 1700 mm (67”)
  • Stalls
    • 1500 mm (59.1”)wide  by 1600 mm (63”) deep stall

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Spring actuated faucets not allowed
  • Peened or gripping surface Not required

URINALS

  • Rim height *just wording adjustment
    • 488 mm (19.3”) to 512 mm (20.1”)
  • Grab bars *just wording adjustment
    • 2 grab bars mounted vertically on each side of urinal 300 mm (11.9”) long

SHOWERS

  • Handshowers
    • Minimum 1500 (59.1”) mm hose required
  • Grab Bars
    • Minimum 900 mm (35.5”) grab bar
      • Horizontal
      • 700 mm (27.6”) to 900 mm (35.5”) off the floor
      • Can overlap seat by maximum of 300 mm (11.9”)

BATHTUB

  • Size and Space
    • Minimum 1500 mm (59.1”) long
    • 750 mm (29.6”) by 1500 mm (59.1”) clear transfer space
  • Grab bars
    • Minimum 1500 (59.1”) mm hose required
    • 2 Minimum 1200 mm (47.3”) grab bars
      • 1 vertical, 1 horizontal
      • Lower end 180 mm (7.1”) to 280 mm (11”)
Access Design Standards for Saskatchewan

The new guidelines for 2020 are cohesive with those from other provinces but continue to emphasize additional support.

BATHROOMS

  • Toilet Location – Distance from sidewall
    • 460 mm (18.2”) to 480 mm(18.8”)
  • Turning Circle:
    • 1500 mm (59.1”)
  • Stalls
    • 1500 mm (59.1”) square clear floor space in front of stall

WATER CLOSETS

  • Rear grab bar
    • Can be split into two 300 mm (11.8”) grab bars on each side of the flush valve if needed

URINALS

  • Rim height *just wording adjustment 
    • Less than 430 mm (16.9”)
  • Grab bars *just wording adjustment
    • 600 mm (23.7”) long

SHOWERS

  • Handshowers
    • Usable at 1200 mm (47.3”) and 2030 mm (79.9”) off the floor
      • Best accomplished with 900 mm (35.4”) slide bar
    • Minimum 1800 (59.1”) mm hose required
  • Grab Bars
    • L-shaped grab bar on back wall
      • Horizontal component 1000 mm (39.4”)
        • 750 mm (29.6”) to 870 mm (34.2”) off the floor
      • Vertical component 750 mm (29.6”)
        • Same side as side wall grab bar
        • 400 mm (15.8”) to 500 mm (19.6”) from side wall
    • Vertical Straight side wall grab bar
      • Minimum 1000 mm (39.4”)
      • 50 mm (2”) to 80 mm (3.1”) to side wall
      • 600 (23.7”) to 650 mm (25.5”) off the floor to lower part

Alberta Access Design Standards

Changes made to the Alberta barrier-free codes were fairly minimal but consist of changes to bathrooms, water closets, urinals, showers, and bathtubs. Grab bars seem to be a consistent change throughout this section.
